This series is a reflection on the algorithm behind social media, essentially naming it as a commercial tool designed to sell – products and content. You are either in or out, there is no in between. Once you engage – which might just be lingering for a few seconds more on a post – the algorithm starts to tilt your feed. The more you engage the narrower or focussed the feed becomes in perspective.
It polarises, repeating content and that repetition replayed can radicalise. This is an accidental by-product of the algorithm – a tool designed to sell. It can end up setting us against each other – creating friction over things as inconsequential as the flow of traffic in an Aldi carpark.
In this set I have fused a bullet with a mannequin head. This symbolises what we become – live rounds. The creators of content – known as influencers – can also be regarded as agitators – and we the consumers become the agitated.
